The International Baccalaureate (IB) DP curriculum identifies the Extended Essay (EE) as one of the core requirement;
The Extended Essay is externally graded by the IB examiners and it ranges from a score of 0 to 34.
These points come from a total of five criteria:
A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)
C: Critical Thinking (12 points maximum)
D: Presentation (4 points maximum) E: Engagement (6 points maximum)
The Extended Essay score gets combined with the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) score and the grade is awarded as a bonus points toward the final IB score.
See the matrix below for the EE and TOK combined grade calculation:
The maximum grade you can get
from getting all 7s in your subject is 42 out of the 45 points. Therefore, if you get all As from both EE and TOK, you will have an additional 3 points to your final score and will receive 45 points as the final score.
Since the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum identifies the Extended Essay (EE) as one of the core requirement, you have a choice of writing your EE using one of the DP category or IB subject groups, which are as follows:
